What Is the Size of a Standard Trash Bin

The size of a standard trash bin can vary depending on the setting in which it is used—residential, commercial, or industrial. However, in general, there are some common sizes that are widely accepted as “standard” in each context.

For residential use, the most common standard trash bin size is around 13 gallons (approximately 49 liters). This size is ideal for use in kitchens, as it offers a good balance between capacity and manageability. These bins are usually about 25 to 30 inches high and 12 to 16 inches wide, designed to fit neatly under countertops or inside cabinets.

For bathrooms or small offices, smaller bins ranging from 1.5 to 4 gallons (6 to 15 liters) are typically used. These are compact and lightweight, often cylindrical or rectangular in shape.

In outdoor or curbside waste collection, standard trash bins are much larger. The most common size in the United States for curbside use is 32 gallons (121 liters), but municipalities also often provide 64-gallon (242 liters) or 96-gallon (363 liters) bins, especially in suburban or rural areas. These larger bins are typically wheel-mounted with hinged lids, standing about 40 to 46 inches high and 24 to 27 inches wide.

For commercial settings, trash can range from 20 to 50 gallons for indoor use, and dumpsters can range from 1 to 8 cubic yards for large-scale outdoor waste collection.

Ultimately, the "standard" size depends on usage requirements, local regulations, and space availability.
